French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux turns a Parisian theatre into the setting of an absurd, unsettling and increasingly unpredictable confrontation in Yannick. Released in 2023, the film uses its concise 67-minute runtime to explore the relationship between artists and audiences, the purpose of entertainment and the social divisions surrounding access to culture.

The story begins during a performance of an uninspiring boulevard comedy. Yannick, a night watchman from outside Paris, has taken time off work and travelled to the city hoping to escape the pressures of his daily life. When the play fails to entertain him, he rises from his seat and openly voices his disappointment. What initially seems like an ordinary complaint soon disrupts the established order inside the theatre and sends the evening in an unexpected direction.

Set almost entirely in a single location, Yannick builds its tension through sharp dialogue, uncomfortable silences and Dupieux’s distinctive sense of dark humour. The film reverses the conventional relationship between performer and spectator: the actors are no longer the only people allowed to speak, while the audience can no longer remain a passive observer.

At the centre of the film is Yannick’s desire to be seen, heard and taken seriously. Raphaël Quenard gives a compelling performance, balancing Yannick’s anger, awkwardness and vulnerability. Pio Marmaï, Blanche Gardin and Sébastien Chassagne complete the principal cast as the performers caught in this unusual confrontation.
